Personally Identifiable Information (PII) = any information that a library requires a patron to provide in order to become eligible to borrow materials or use library services. Examples: name, mailing address, phone number, email address, library card number, sign-up sheets for computers, etc.

Registration = some states restrict coverage to registration records linked to circulation; other states protect any records that contain registration data

Circulation Records = information that identifies patrons utilizing particular books or other library materials in any medium or format

Interlibrary Loan = some laws apply only to ILL materials that circulate; other states protect ILL record requests and usage

Requests for Information = Examples: questions asked at a reference desk, via an email message, in a chat session

Requests for Services = Examples: access to a computer, interlibrary loan, etc.

Transcript of Interaction = questions and answers captured in email or virtual reference (chat) interaction

Weblog Data = IP address, browser type/version, URL of originating page, date & time stamps, etc.
